The song is actually kind of unsettling when you know what it means. Bird is pointing out a colossal flaw in human nature; our desire to reduce everything down to scientific justification. He is criticizing the desire to take the mysteries of human nature, such as love (in this case) and quantify them through science. The line "what was mistaken for closeness was just a case for mitosis" is saying that we mistake feelings of love for closeness when they are really just based in science.
